Things are changing. At one previous point you would have to lay out a lot to be able to make music.

No longer.

The web has grown over the last ten years or so and has opened the world up to several possibilities, including free music software available to download inside a few clicks. Some free application software is not only on the internet, they also are given away on magazine covers too. So the possibilities are unlimited with many websites and web communities now appearing that delve into the world of PC music composition.

Sequencers

Decent free sequencers are hard to find online, but do not be downhearted, if you can get a copy of a magazine broadcast in the UK called "Computer Music" there are actually two of them on the cover CD as part of their Studio software collection.

Virtual Instrument and Effects extensions

This is an area that has exploded in the music world. Free virtual instruments and effects enhancements are everywhere on the web. Even some of the enormous name developers have got in on the process of giving away some of their products.

But , I find that the number one place to go for a respectable plugin is KVR Audio. KVR Audio is a huge site with an online community as well as its enormous database of Virtual Instruments and Effects plugins.

Audio Editor

There's just one audio editor that I'd advocate, and that is's insolence. Insolence is the hottest open source audio editor available and is pole position in my audio setup.

So, there you have it. All of the info you need to start doing music without needing to pay for the software. Although, I say you should actually get a more decent sequencer than a free one as they are far better and have more tools available.

However then you could be the 1st one to ever get a hit record using free computer software alone.
