There's nothing quite like outdoor cooking, complete with the perfect barbecue and grilling accessories, to take care of that hunger. The wonder of a superb over-the-coals cooked meal is often followed by the decision to buy a barbecue. With so many outdoor grills on the market, in every size, style and price range, this decision can lead to a variety of practical concerns.

One of the first things to consider is the size of grill that will best suit your needs and budget. The size you need will be determined by how often you'll use your outdoor kitchen and how many people you'll be feeding. If you often host big parties, you'll need a sizeable barbecue with a cooking area of 800 inches or more and extra space to hold a large amount of food. If you only entertain large groups occasionally, then a grill with a medium to large area that can cook 25-40 burgers at once and has some working space may be all you need. For most families, 350 square inches of cooking space should be adequate.

When settling on the right size of barbecue, the types of food you intend to cook should also be taken into account. Obviously, a full sized turkey will require more space than smaller items like hamburgers and hot dogs. Furthermore, if you often use accessories such as rotisserie attachments, larger vegetable, fish or other specialty baskets for cooking delicate foods, or smoker baskets for wood chips, additional grilling space may be required.

Before buying a barbecue, you will also need to decide which features are "must haves" for you. A side burner will let you fry, saute or boil foods in a pot or skillet while you grill. Multiple cooking racks can allow you to cook vegetables or other foods via indirect heat while meat sears directly over the flames. Finally, consider the sophistication of your cooking skills. Novice outdoor cooks may just need the basics, but advanced barbecue chefs may desire additional controls, accessories and features to fine-tune their technique.

Barbecues range considerably in price, starting at smaller, travel-friendly charcoal options that are quite economical. You might prefer to start with a basic charcoal brazier for around $50. However, if you want to begin with a full kitchen type of grill that has lots of features, you can purchase a reputable model for $500 or less.

If you are really serious about outdoor cooking, then you know that accessories such as tool sets are a must. These sets generally contain grilling tools such as long handled heat resistant forks, tongs, skewers, turners, and corncob holders. In addition, many styles of rotisserie attachments for grills have hit the market lately. Other useful tools might include grate lifters, basting brushes, hooks and meat thermometers for large cuts of meat to assure that the food is cooked perfectly. And finally, don't forget those wood chips to add flavor to whatever food you are cooking.
